When the Buffalo Soldier chooses a shape and steps into the world, nobody knows what he is, where he came from, or why reality itself seems to obey his presence. Then he stops walking, and everything stops with him. Time continues but leads nowhere, distance loses meaning, wounds close without healing, and living things become trapped between one moment and the next. Elias Crow discovers the terrifying truth: the creature is not deliberately holding the world still. The world has stopped simply because he has. Now Elias must somehow persuade an impossible being to take one more step, because if the Buffalo Soldier never moves again, nothing else ever will.
